THE GIFT

Cold wind blows through the French curtains in her dimly lit bedroom making her shiver. Everything about the room looks the same as it was a few years ago, yet nothing feels the same. The blue room walls adorned with her favorite artifacts somehow make her sick today. The numerous collages and photo frames make her gloomier than ever. Her princess bed sitting in the corner of the room only makes her more melancholic. She glides through the room at a snail’s pace, trying to cheer herself up but every attempt at it only seems vain. She stumbles upon the packed bags that seem all ready to move out unlike her. Gathering all the strength she can muster she opens the untouched gift package with trembling hands. The silver shines blinding her eyes. Keeping the gift aside she reads the note. She can almost hear his voice as she reads it. His words accelerate her heartbeats. Tears of joy stroll down her cheeks as she reads the golden words in the post script. She hugs her gift tightly for the last time and tears the note apart. As much as her heart wants to keep it, she knows she has to let it go. She finally feels ready to move on, to start her new life today.
The room burns down to an eerie silence as she enters. Whispers and gazes surround her as she drags herself through the crowd. She sees him there, at the center of the room waiting for her just like everyone else. On reaching closer she looks at his face, as blank as ever, the only difference this time is that it looks very peaceful.

She is left alone with him and the cold wind which seems to get harsher by the hour. All the memories come rushing back to her. They both stare into the sky, gazing at the stars. She feels safer with him around. Happier knowing that he would not leave her now. No matter what, he will always be there like he promised. She bends over and leaves her shiny silver gift with him, walking away from his grave, thinking about the letter which claims his death by the silver shiny murder weapon and the post script which says
“your wish my command”.
